Following in the footsteps of the first National Symposium, the British Council Indonesia Foundation presents the 2nd National Symposium on English Language Assessment to be held in Jakarta on 20 - 21 March 2019. The two-day event includes workshops, plenary sessions, panel discussions and smaller breakout group sessions.

Theme

The Alignment of Teaching and Assessment in Learning Systems

Subthemes

  • Developing Teacher Assessment Literacy

Teachers, who are at the point of interface between learning and assessment, are best positioned to ensure that the link between testing and teaching results in positive improvement of students' language ability. This requires an understanding of how tests work and how to link tests to the abilities they are working to improve. Papers focusing on the impact of teachers' assessment literacy on teaching and performance and on initiatives to improve assessment literacy amongst educators are invited.

  • Formative Assessment for Writing

Writing skills, whether in a first or other language, require constant feedback to develop and improve. Under this subtheme, we invite papers that focus on different methods and tools used for feedback on writing in the classroom and beyond.

  • Writing Test Items to Promote Learning

Test items that focus on testing one-dimensional or superficial abilities such as memorisation are ineffective tools to improve the communicative abilities of students. Papers that explore or discuss how test items can be made meaningful as learning as well as assessment tools are invited under this subtheme.

Objectives

The event symposium will have the following objectives:

  • Enhance understanding of the current opportunities and challenges for language assessment in the Indonesian educational context.
  • Connect teachers, education and language assessment professionals to facilitate sharing of expertise in their fields and better understanding of the mutual impact between teaching and testing.
  • Raise awareness of developments in teaching, assessment and learning systems in Indonesia and encourage teachers and testers to work together for mutual benefit.
  • Explore the link between proficiency standards and classroom practice.

Target Audiences

This symposium will be of interest to:

  • Higher education institutions: head of language centre, testing practitioners, lecturers.
  • Vocational education institutions: testing practitioners, teachers and academic staff.
  • Policy/decision makers from higher education and vocational institutions.
