JAKARTA, 9 June 2026 – SMA Santa Ursula Jakarta has been named the East Asia regional winner of the 11th Your World competition, a global video making competition organised as part of the British Council Partner Schools programme that empowers students to address real-world sustainability challenges. Its winning entry, “Snap Week: Our Solution to Responsible Consumption,” stood out for its clear identification of the problem of plastic waste and its presentation of the SNAP initiative—Say No to All Plastic and Paper Waste—as a creative, practical solution. The project was well organised and visually engaging, delivering an accessible and relevant message while demonstrating meaningful impact through observable changes in behaviour within the school community.
This year’s Your World competition was held under the theme “Smarter Choices, Stronger Futures,” focusing on responsible consumption and production. Through the Zero-Waste Week Challenge, students were encouraged to rethink daily habits and adopt practical actions such as reducing waste and reusing materials. Santa Ursula’s initiative demonstrated measurable changes in student behaviour in just one week, while presenting a solution that can be replicated in other schools across Indonesia.
Indonesia was represented by three shortlisted entries: “Snap Week” by SMA Santa Ursula Jakarta, “Website Workshop – IJO IJO” by Madrasah Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah, and “Trace Exhibition Campaign” by Sekolah Kristen Immanuel. They competed against entries from across East Asia, including Indonesia, Myanmar, Taiwan and Vietnam. Globally, the competition received 342 submissions from 1,710 students in 244 schools, reflecting growing youth engagement in sustainability issues.
Summer Xia, Country Director Indonesia and Director South East Asia at the British Council said: “This is a proud and significant moment for Indonesia, as we celebrate our first East Asia win in the British Council Your World competition. What is truly inspiring is not only the idea itself, but how these students brought it to life by working collaboratively, thinking critically, and addressing a real-world challenge with a practical solution. Their journey demonstrates that learning extends far beyond the classroom. It becomes action, impact, and positive change. It is a powerful reminder that when young people are equipped with the right skills and opportunities, they have both the confidence and the capability to shape a more sustainable future for us all.”
The Your World initiative supports students in developing critical thinking, creativity and communication skills, while encouraging them to apply classroom learning to real-world challenges.
Empowered to lead
The winning team for the East Asia region, SMA Santa Ursula Jakarta presented the SNAP initiative—Say No to All Plastic and Paper Waste—demonstrating how collective action at school level can lead to measurable environmental impact. The video captured students adopting new habits and documenting changes in waste reduction, illustrating both immediate results and the potential for wider adoption.
Marsha Saputra, student representative of SMA Santa Ursula Jakarta, said “We initially focused on finding solutions for the waste that had already been produced, but through many consultations and through many discussions and revisions, we realised that maybe the real solution was not about managing waste better but about preventing it from being created in the first place. That shift in mindset became the main idea of our project, which is ‘SNAP Week’. We hope our projects can inspire other young people to realise that even simple actions can create meaningful change.”
The global winning team from International School of Pakistan in Kuwait was recognised for its practical approach to reducing waste through everyday behavioural change at school and at home.
Beyond the winners, entries from Indonesia and other participating countries highlighted diverse, locally relevant solutions to sustainability challenges—underscoring the growing role of young people in driving environmental action.
